4 Always be full of joy in the Lord. I say it again–rejoice! 5 Let everyone see that you are considerate in all you do. Remember, the Lord is coming soon. 6 Don’t worry about anything; instead, pray about everything. Tell God what you need, and thank him for all he has done. 7 Then you will experience God’s peace, which exceeds anything we can understand. His peace will guard your hearts and minds as you live in Christ Jesus. 8 And now, dear brothers and sisters, one final thing. Fix your thoughts on what is true, and honorable, and right, and pure, and lovely, and admirable. Think about things that are excellent and worthy of praise. [Phl 4:4-8 NLT]

It can seem impossible to be positive in a world filled with contested election results, contested facts about a pandemic, riots in the street, social injustice, hurricanes, and fires.   When the very foundations of society are being shaken how can we hope to look at thing in a positive light?  Isn’t depression a legitimate?

Dr. Norman Wise will suggest that while fully acknowledging the difficulties of our lives we can develop  an attitude of “Prophetic Optimism” which allows us to process our way to creating a positive framework on even dark situations.  To with our tears, anxiety, concerns, we can find promise and hope.

This no “name it and claim it” magical thinking approach but one that allows for realistic optimism in the midst of struggle.
